Judy Carlson, owner and founder of Surrounded in Peace, joins host Ken Haglind on “Living Healthy and Aging Well” radio show to discuss end-of-life planning. As an End-of-Life Doula, Judy will share more about this important role and how she coaches and supports the community, individuals and their families. Judy became an End-of-Life Doula after being a caregiver for her parents.
She went through a period of loss, including her mother’s death, where she was left with many questions and unknowns. After feeling regrets surrounding her mother’s death and how it was handled, Judy felt called to look into end-of-life care and be an advocate for individuals and their families. She found doula training through Doulagivers™ and realized the information that doulas share should be a part of aging-well plans for everyone. “It’s knowledge our ancestors knew, and we’ve forgotten a lot of it. We also live in a time with a multitude of options to choose from, and planning will allow for one’s wishes to be carried out and take some burden off family and loved ones during a stressful and grievous time,” according to Judy. Judy is a life-long Minnesotan residing in Savage, Minn.
As a doula, she supports individuals and their loved ones with expertise, knowledge and guidance throughout the aging and end-of-life processes. A portion of the mission of Surrounded in Peace is to share resources and skills as we navigate a holistic and dignified end of life. The vision is to live in a world where our elderly loved ones have support to plan out their physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and financial wishes as they journey through end of life.
