Jenny Matthews, licensed mental health therapist and owner of State of Mind Therapy in the Twin Cities, joins host Ken Haglind on “Living Healthy and Aging Well” to discuss how a fear of flying can limit opportunities for travel, connection, and meaningful life experiences.
Jenny specializes in working with anxiety disorders, OCD, and phobias, helping people break free from cycles of worry, panic, and avoidance. Drawing from both her clinical work and personal experience with flight anxiety, she shares why this fear is so common, what actually drives it beyond concerns about safety, and why many people feel stuck even when they logically know flying is safe.
Listeners will gain insight into what’s really fueling the fear of flying—and why it can feel so difficult to “logic your way out of it.” Jenny also shares a powerful mindset shift that can help people feel more confident, even when anxiety is still present.
The conversation will also highlight a unique local resource—Navigating Flight Anxiety at MSP Airport—an in-person workshop designed to help individuals learn and practice anxiety management skills in a real airport setting, without the pressure of getting on a flight. The workshop is co-facilitated with her husband, Justin, who brings a background in both therapy and the aviation industry, offering a well-rounded perspective on both the emotional and practical aspects of flying.
Registration for the upcoming workshop is currently open and will close on May 13th, with the next opportunity not available until September.
